WWE has issued a statement celebrating the addition of CM Punk to the Backstage team after his appearance on Tuesday night.
There are many wrestlers who have previously vowed never to return to WWE. Almost all of them have somehow managed to repair that bridge, no matter how burned. Bret Hart, Bruno Sammartino, Ultimate Warrior. All examples of wrestlers who most fans could never have imagined working with WWE ever again. In the case of CM Punk, it felt as if he might actually stick to his word.
Then Tuesday night happened. As WWE Backstage was coming to a close, Renee Young dropped a bombshell. The host welcomed Punk onto the set as Cult of Personality played, the music he would come to the ring to during the second half of his WWE run. Punk cut a short promo right in front of the camera, revealing that fans could see him on Backstage next week.

Even when Punk was having auditions for the show earlier this year, people were quick to point out he was working with FOX, not WWE. That is technically true, but he is definitely back within the WWE fold. WWE acknowledged Punk's appearance on Backstage by posting a lengthy statement on WWE.com. It detailed what happened on the show and also celebrated all of the achievements Punk accomplished during his run with WWE.
"Punk left an unforgettable legacy during his WWE career, including holding the WWE Championship for a remarkable 434 days," part of the statement reads. Unforgettable is right, although WWE has done its level best to make fans forget about the former champion. It also lists what Punk has been up to since leaving WWE, including his foray into UFC and work with Marvel.
Shortly after Backstage went off the air, WWE on FOX's Twitter account confirmed that The Second City Saint will be appearing on the show periodically. It might not be an in-ring return, but we'll definitely take it. The whole premise of the show is for its hosts and guests to break down what is going on in WWE. To hear what Punk makes of the product almost six years after his departure will be fascinating.
