The last 8 months have been incredibly tumultuous for WWE. Last July, Vince McMahon announced that he would be retiring from his role as WWE CEO after working for the company for 4 decades. His decision to retire came in the midst of several surfacing allegations of sexual misconduct and the revelation that McMahon had paid 4 women more than $12 million in hush money. Stephanie McMahon's husband Paul Levesque (better known by his ring name Triple H) assumed the role of WWE head of creative. Together, they got WWE back on track. Now, though, there's been another change in course.
Stephanie McMahon Steps Down
Matthew Belloni of The Ringer reported via Twitter that Stephanie McMahon had sent an internal memo to WWE cast and crew announcing her retirement. This comes just 4 days after former CEO (and father of Stephanie McMahon) Vince McMahon rejoined the WWE board of executives.
Then, Stephanie McMahon took to Twitter to announce her departure.
About 8 months ago, I took a leave of absence and within a few weeks, unexpectedly had the opportunity of a lifetime. I had the privilege to return as the Co-CEO and Chairwoman of the Board of WWE. I cannot put into words how proud I am to have led what I consider to be the greatest company in the world, working alongside a remarkable leadership team and one of the strongest executives I have known in my Co-CEO, Nick Khan.Our Founder, Vince McMahon, has returned as Executive Chair and is leading an exciting process regarding strategic alternatives. And with Nick's leadership and Paul "Triple H" Levesque as Chief Content Officer, l am confident WWE is in the perfect place to continue to provide unparalleled creative content and drive maximum value for shareholders.WWE is in such a strong position, that I have decided to return to my leave and take it one step further with my official resignation.
Her decision to step down leaves Nick Khan as the sole CEO of WWE.
