The recent announcement of WWE SmackDown's departure from FOX has sent shockwaves through the wrestling community. The celebrated partnership, marked by glitzy premieres and star-studded appearances, will soon be a thing of the past. But what led to this surprising decision, and what does it mean for the future of WWE programming? In this article, we delve into the intricate details behind this seismic shift, uncovering the underlying factors that prompted the network's choice. From big money return concerns to a lucrative new deal with an unexpected broadcaster, the story unfolds with intriguing complexity. There have been a lot of twists and turns in this high-stakes maneuver.

WWE SmackDown's Partnership With FOX Is Coming To An End

WWE SmackDown has enjoyed a prominent spot on the FOX network ever since late 2019 when the media rights for the show were acquired in a multi-million dollar deal. The acquisition was a momentous occasion, marked by a grand red carpet event that saw WWE stars gracing the occasion. The premiere of SmackDown on FOX was equally spectacular, with the return of iconic wrestler, The Rock, to WWE.

He teamed up with "The Man" Becky Lynch to electrify the night by taking on Baron Corbin in a memorable segment. However, it has recently been reported that WWE SmackDown will no longer be part of the FOX network lineup from late 2024, marking the end of an era that was celebrated with great fanfare.

Why WWE SmackDown Is Leaving FOX

The shocking decision to part ways with WWE SmackDown was made public during the Q1 2024 Fox Corporation Earnings Conference Call. FOX CEO Lachlan Murdoch disclosed the reasoning behind the network's choice to end their partnership with SmackDown. Despite WWE being terrific partners and attracting a dedicated fan base, the return on investment (ROI) from advertising during WWE shows didn't meet FOX's expectations.

He said, "I think we’ve talked about this before but how we analyzed the WWE renewal, and we look at all of our sports portfolios in the same way… Based on the analysis, (from) an advertising point of view, we were not hitting the advertising numbers due to the audience of WWE to make the return for our return on investment to be above the levels that we would accept. But also, we didn’t attribute enough significant retransmission revenue to the WWE either. So it made sense for us to move on from them. They’ve been a great partner for many years. But just quite simply, we’re very disciplined and the R.O.I. didn’t meet our disciplined parameters so, we wish them luck, and we’ve moved on from them."

In oversimplified terms this means, the advertisements shown during SmackDown failed to resonate with the WWE audience to a degree that motivated them to engage with the advertisers' services. This disappointment in ROI became a critical factor in the decision to sever ties with WWE SmackDown.

WWE SmackDown's New Home Will Be On The USA Network

With WWE SmackDown leaving FOX, the wrestling juggernaut quickly found a new home with the USA Network, owned by NBC Universal. The reported value of this new deal is a staggering 1.4 billion dollars, which represents a 40% increase from the previous FOX deal. Starting from October 2024, SmackDown will find a new audience on the USA Network. This move is significant because USA Network already hosts WWE's other flagship programs, RAW and NXT, while NBC's streaming service, Peacock, holds exclusive rights to the WWE Network in all the United States. The transition from FOX to the USA Network poses questions about the broader landscape of WWE broadcasting. If USA Network manages to retain RAW whose media rights will expire with the USA a month before SmackDown begins on it, NBC Universal will effectively become the sole provider of WWE content in the US market.

The apparent contradiction between FOX's struggle to achieve ROI and NBC Universal's willingness to invest billions in WWE programming demands examination. Several factors may contribute to NBC's willingness to commit substantial resources to WWE. These factors include the differences in audience demographics between the networks, the advertisers involved, and the historical relationship between WWE and NBC. With a new home on the USA Network and a generous deal in place, WWE SmackDown seems poised for a promising future with its top stars like Roman Reigns, Bayley, Charlotte Flair, Bianca Belair, and LA Knight taking the helm of the brand. Returning legends like The Rock and John Cena have also made SmackDown a must-see.
