Frasier and Lilith reunite on Freddy's birthday in the Frasier reboot episode 7, but the show doesn't reveal what exactly went wrong between them.

Lilith in Cheers and Frasier and Lilith in the reboot

Warning! Spoilers ahead for the Frasier reboot episode 7.

Summary

  • Frasier and Lilith's divorce was caused by Lilith's affair with her colleague, Dr. Louis Pascal, and their attempts to reconcile failed.
  • The original Frasier revealed that their divorce was finalized and Lilith ended up raising their son Freddy.
  • Despite their split, Frasier and Lilith maintained co-parenting and sought each other's advice but remained antagonistic and contentious towards each other. Their possible reconciliation in the reboot is hinted at after Frasier's recent breakup.

Freddy's parents come face to face in the Frasier reboot episode 7, but the outing doesn't reveal the reason why Frasier and Lilith got divorced in the first place. Bebe Neuwirth reprises her role as Lilith Sternin in the Paramount+ project, marking the first major guest star in the show from the Frasier Crane universe. The Frasier reboot episode 7, aptly titled "Freddy's Birthday," doesn't waste time re-introducing the franchise's best ice queen and makes the most out of the character's one-time guest appearance in the revival. Considering the limited screen time, however, the show isn't able to delve into her history with Frasier.

Like Frasier, Lilith was introduced in Cheers. On the heels of his relationship with Diane, the NBC sitcom opted to debut a brand-new love interest for the snobby psychiatrist, who ended up being Neuwirth's character. When Diane and Sam broke up permanently, Frasier and Lilith became the primary love line in Cheers. They went through many ups and downs during their time consistently hanging out at the iconic underground pub. In fact, Cheers even tackled the birth of Freddy, who also visited the bar as an infant. Unfortunately, their marital bliss didn't last very long.

Frasier & Lilith Divorced After Cheers, But Before Frasier

Frasier and Lilith's story primarily played out during Cheers.

Arguably one of the most well-known divorced couples on TV, Frasier and Lilith's story primarily played out during the events of Cheers. That being said, it continued, albeit in small increments, even after Frasier moved to Seattle in the old show. Just a few years after the birth of Freddy, Lilith and Frasier ended up getting divorced because she cheated on him. In Cheers season 11, episode 6, Lilith's affair with her colleague Dr. Louis Pascal was revealed. This resulted in Freddy's parents separating as Lilith chose to leave her husband for her new lover. When that failed, she tried getting back with Frasier, but it ultimately failed.

Frasier & Lilith Divorced After Her Affair

Frasier doesn't like bringing up the affair.

Cheers didn't delve into the process of Frasier and Lilith's divorce. In fact, the sitcom ended with their relationship in limbo. Considering everything that was going on in the sitcom, including the return of Diane and her attempt to get back together with Sam, it made sense that the sitcom didn't get to spend time on what was happening between Frasier and Lilith. Despite that, the original Frasier subsequently revealed pertinent details about what went down in their relationship, including the fact that they finalized their divorce. The terms of it were never discussed, but it seemed like they agreed on a fair settlement, with Lilith ending up raising Freddy.

In fact, the separation was the primary reason for Frasier's decision to move back to Seattle, even if it meant that he was going to be far from Freddy. During Lilith's first appearance in the original Frasier, it was revealed that Frasier attempted to stay together with his wife, but nothing came out of it after Lilith failed to read the letter he left in their Boston house. Although Frasier doesn't like bringing up the affair, he once admitted to his father, the late Martin Crane, that he attempted to end his life due to the anguish of being betrayed.

Frasier & Lilith Don't Work Together (& The Reboot Confirms It)

They just can't help themselves but be antagonistic and contentious.

Lilith and Frasier's relationship has had its ups and downs since their separation. Despite their ugly split, they remained committed to co-parenting, always on the same page when it came to wanting the best for Freddy. They had an odd connection even as former lovers, with the pair seeking each other's advice when dealing with their respective love woes after they divorced. Despite this bond, however, the Frasier reboot episode 7 makes it clear that they cannot be together. While they seem to still be attracted to each other, they just can't help themselves but be antagonistic and contentious.

It's uncertain if the Paramount+ reboot plans to develop the pair's relationship moving forward. However, Charlotte breaking up with Frasier paves the way for their possible reconciliation. It doesn't seem like Lilith is also seeing anyone else, which makes it easier. Although it's unlikely that Lilith will become a series regular in the revival, the fact that they are both now based in Boston allows the show an easy way to move their story forward. That being said, if they are ever going to rekindle their romance in the Frasier reboot, they need to address their lingering issues first. Otherwise, the chances of them eventually breaking up again are high.

The Frasier reboot drops new episodes every Thursday on Paramount+.
