2023 has been quite the year for Tay Melo and Sammy Guevara. Melo has remained absent from in-ring competition since March 3, 2023, when she and Guevara wrestled at NEW WrestleFest XXVII. While she was initially out of action due to injury, she has been out of the ring due to her pregnancy which was announced at Double Or Nothing 2023. With the exception of a couple on-screen segments, Melo has been absent from AEW. However, a major change has happened very recently in the couple’s life. On November 28, 2023, Melo and Guevara welcomed their daughter, Luna Melo Guevara, to the world.

Even though she has only been involved in professional wrestling since 2016, Tay Melo has proven to fans why she is one of the biggest up-and-coming stars in the industry. Having been signed to AEW since 2020, she has already had some very memorable and classic matches in the promotion. She has shined in singles action with her martial arts style, and also in her tag team with Anna Jay. In addition, she was a member of the Jericho Appreciation Society, alongside Jay and her real life husband, Sammy Guevara. Unfortunately, however, Melo has recently been off of AEW television due to an injury that has kept her out of the ring.

Tay Melo Has Been Out Of Action Due To A Back Protrusion

A Back Injury That Dated Back 10 Years Needed To Be Addressed

The reasoning for Melo’s absence from AEW has been due to a back injury that has been affecting her for a number of years. As she told Elite POV (h/t Fightful), “I have a protrusion on my back, so it’s something that I’ve been dealing with for more than 10 years by now.” Even prior to partaking in a street fight where herself and Jay faced Ruby Soho and Willow Nightingale on the January 11, 2023, edition of Rampage, she was in significant pain. She said, “I’ll never say no, let me tell you, unless I’m really dying. I was like, I’m in pain, I knew I was in pain. The day before, let me tell you, I couldn’t walk. I couldn’t walk. At the airport, the walk was so long, we had to get a wheelchair for me because I was not able to walk for too long. It was really bad.”

However, Melo also revealed some good news in this interview regarding her medical status. She said that she was only a matter of weeks away from being cleared to compete. She stated, “...after the match, I checked everything. I went to a couple different doctors and our doctor in AEW. So I’m not cleared for now, but I will be really soon. I’m good, don’t worry. I want to be cleared, but the doctor trying to hold me [back] a little bit to make sure I’m 100%. They told me I will be cleared in the next couple weeks, so I’ll be fine.”

Tay Melo Has Accomplished A Lot In AEW

Her Last AEW Appearance Was At Double Or Nothing 2023

Melo has been with AEW since signing with the company on September 9, 2020, after she first debuted as part of the Women's Deadly Draw Tag Team Cup Tournament. Since then, she had been aligned with Anna Jay and also was an affiliate of the Dark Order, but never an official member. Melo consistently displayed how talented she was, picking up numerous wins in her early AEW run. This included championship matches with Serena Deeb for the NWA World Women’s Title and the AEW Women’s World Championship against Hikaru Shida.

She also took part in many more memorable feuds as her AEW career has progressed. At Full Gear 2021, she faced Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D. for the AEW Women’s World Title, but was unsuccessful. In addition, She and Jay had a brutal and intense rivalry against Penelope Ford and The Bunny. This culminated in a phenomenal street fight at New Year’s Smash 2021 on Rampage. She also faced Jade Cargill for the TBS Championship at Revolution 2022.
