Following the sale of WCW to Vince McMahon and WWE, the future of those stars was left in question. A handful of WCW’s stars were picked up by WWE as part of the sale, but others were locked down by a separate contract with AOL-Time Warner including WCW's franchise star, Sting! This allowed Sting to continue collecting a paycheck through March 2002.

After his AOL-Time Warner contract had expired, Sting’s future in the wrestling business remained in question. Despite offers made by Vince McMahon and WWE, Sting declined and didn’t trust how WWE would handle his character. Fast-forward to late 2005, TNA Wrestling announced that Sting had signed a contract with the organization.

Sting made his official debut with TNA at Final Resolution in January 2006, teaming up with Christian Cage as they defeated Jeff Jarrett and Monty Brown. This reignited the rivalry between Sting and Jeff Jarrett seen back in WCW in 2000, with Jarrett on top of the company as NWA World Heavyweight Champion.

Sting went on to feud with Jarrett throughout 2006 culminating in an NWA World Heavyweight Championship match at Bound for Glory, with the debuting Kurt Angle as the Special Enforcer. Sting defeated Jarrett to become the new NWA World Champion. One month later, Sting dropped the NWA World Championship to Abyss at Genesis.

TNA Fans Cheered Sting

Sting spent 2007 feuding with Kurt Angle and becoming TNA World Champion at Bound for Glory in 2007 before dropping the title back to Angle at Genesis. Sting would take time off from the company shortly thereafter. He made his return to TNA Wrestling in April 2008 and took part in the “Lethal Lockdown” match teaming with Christian Cage, Kevin Nash, Rhino, and Matt Morgan in defeating AJ Styles, Tomko, “Cowboy” James Storm, and Team 3D.

Sting turned heel at Hard Justice after attacking AJ Styles during his Last Man Standing match against Kurt Angle with his baseball bat. He went on to challenge Samoa Joe for the TNA World Heavyweight Championship at Bound for Glory, defeating Joe thanks to the returning Kevin Nash, who struck “The Samoan Submission Machine” down with a baseball bat.

Shortly thereafter, the “Main Event Mafia” was formed, consisting of Sting, Kurt Angle, Kevin Nash, Scott Steiner, and Booker T, all veteran heels who wanted to take over TNA as a means of gaining back respect they felt was lost to the young generation of wrestlers. The faction feuded with the likes of AJ Styles, Samoa Joe, Rhino, and Team 3D. However, dissension began heading into mid-2009, as Sting and Kurt Angle had differing philosophies on how the group should conduct business, with Sting still receiving a babyface reaction despite being involved in a heel faction.

Sting defeated Kurt Angle at Sacrifice in 2009 to become the new “Godfather” of the Main Event Mafia. This lasted until July 2009, when members of the Main Event Mafia turned their backs on Sting, siding with Kurt Angle, as Sting was kicked out of the group and “officially” made a babyface once again. Sting continued feuding with the Main Event Mafia in the next several months. By October 2009, Sting challenged AJ Styles for the TNA World Heavyweight Championship at Bound for Glory. Styles defeated Sting, and this was teased as a curtain call for Sting and his career in TNA.

Another TNA Heel Turn

Sting returned in 2010, as Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff made their debut for TNA and essentially took over the company. Not trusting Hogan or Bischoff, Sting formed an alliance with Kevin Nash to take down Hogan and company, thus turning “heel” in the process. Sting swore that Hogan was pulling the wool over the eyes of TNA President Dixie Carter.

By October 2010, at Bound for Glory, Hogan and Bischoff’s master plan was revealed, as “they” had arrived. Hogan, Bischoff, alongside new TNA World Heavyweight Champion Jeff Hardy, Jeff Jarrett, Abyss, AJ Styles, James Storm, Bobby Roode, Frankie Kazarian, and Ric Flair formed a new faction called “Immortal”. Sting rejected the offer by Immortal to join their stable and took a leave of absence from TNA.

Sting returned in mid-2011 and began feuding with Jeff Hardy and Immortal. He transformed his character into the “Joker”. The feud between Hulk Hogan and Immortal culminated at Bound for Glory, with Sting defeating Hogan.

Over the next few years, Sting feuded with Aces and Eights, led by Bully Ray. Sting also reformed the Main Event Mafia during this time to combat the faction. By November 2011, the Aces and Eights had disbanded and so did the Main Event Mafia. Sting would become the first TNA Hall of Fame inductee in October 2012.

Sting's Final Days In TNA Wrestling

Last Match Against EC3

Sting spent his remaining time in TNA Wrestling heading into early 2014 feuding with World Champion, EC3. In a “Title vs. Career” match at Genesis, Sting lost to EC3 in his final match with the company. Sting revealed during an interview on the “Ross Report” podcast with Jim Ross that he left TNA due to being unhappy with the contract offer made by the company.

Sting left TNA Wrestling on great terms and would even appear at Slammiversary 2022 in a video message to congratulate the company on their 20th year anniversary.
