Summary
- Kenny Johnson's character, Detective Lem, was killed off in The Shield for creative reasons and was a part of the show's planned ending.
- The other actors on the show were upset about Johnson leaving but eventually understood the writers' decision.
- After The Shield, Johnson gained a role on S.W.A.T. through his working relationship with creator Shawn Ryan.
Sadly, Kenny Johnson's Detective Curtis "Lem" Lemansky did not appear in all seven seasons of The Shield since the actor parted ways with the television show following the season 5 finale. The FX crime drama series aired from 2002 to 2008 and centered around the Strike Team, a group of corrupt cops that worked for the Los Angeles Police Department. They used unorthodox (illegal) methods to bump their success rate, even though justice was rarely served whenever they were called upon to help rid the neighborhood of crime.
Aside from Johnson as Lem, the rest of the detectives on the Strike Team and the main cast of The Shield included Michael Chiklis as Vic Mackey, Walton Goggins Jr. as Shane Vendrell, and David Rees Snell as Ronnie Gardocki. A few other series regulars throughout the show's seven seasons were Catherine Dent as Danny Sofer, Reed Diamond as Terry Crowley, Michael Jace as Julien Lowe, Jay Karnes as Dutch Wagenbach, Benito Martinez as David Aceveda, and Glenn Close as Monica Rawling. Multiple cast members came and went over the course of The Shield, but the most shocking exit was undoubtedly Johnson's.
Kenny Johnson’s Curtis Lemansky Was Killed Off For Creative Reasons
One of the most surprising moments of The Shield came when Shane dropped a grenade into Lem's car and killed him during the season 5 finale. Shane mistakenly believed that Lem would implicate the rest of the Strike Team in the Money Train heist, so he thought he was protecting himself and his friends when he murdered Lem. However, Shane only sealed his fate by killing someone he considered a close friend.
As for the behind-the-scenes reason Kenny Johnson's character was killed off the show, the writers wrote Lem out for creative reasons. According to an extensive interview that Entertainment Weekly conducted with the cast and crew of The Shield in 2022, creator Shawn Ryan had a plan about how he wanted the series to end by season 7, and that all began with Shane killing Lem in the season 5 finale. The other actors, including Michael Chiklis and Walton Goggins Jr., were upset about their costar leaving but eventually understood. While Johnson was also sad about his character's fate, he made peace with the writers' creative decision.
Kenny Johnson’s Exit Led To Him Gaining A Role On S.W.A.T.
Creator Shawn Ryan ultimately decided that killing off Kenny Johnson's Lem was the best path for the FX show's story. However, that didn't mark the end of Ryan and Johnson's working relationship. After The Shield ended, Ryan went on to develop S.W.A.T. for CBS alongside Aaron Rahsaan Thomas, and he cast Johnson to play Dominique Luca in the television series in 2017. Ryan felt guilty about how Johnson found out about Lem's death in The Shield from someone else instead of him, but as the filmmaker stated in the Entertainment Weekly interview, he believes S.W.A.T. has made up for it.
