The diminutive yellow helpers are the most well-known part of the Despicable Me series, but just who voices the Minions? Here's the full story.

Who Voices The Minions

Gru's diminutive yellow accomplices have probably been the biggest legacy of the Minions and Despicable Me saga, but just who voices the Minions in Minions: The Rise of Gru and beyond isn't exactly clear. Unlike many other famous animated characters, Minions lack a distinctive vocal inflection, instead communicating in a series of nonsensical jabbering squeaks. As a result, it wouldn't necessarily make sense for an A-List performer to lend their considerable – not to mention expensive – talents to the role.

The Minions made their debut in 2010's Despicable Me. Although originally intended to serve as comic sidekicks to Steve Carell's Gru, it quickly became clear that they were the real stars of the show. As a result, each subsequent Despicable Me installment has upped the Minions quota, to the point where they are now legitimate costars. This has been made abundantly clear with the success of two Minions-focused spin-offs – 2015's eponymous Minions and its 2022 sequel Minions: The Rise of Gru.

In each movie, the babbling chatter of Kevin, Bob and others has played a key role in establishing the series' tone and universal slapstick humor. In every installment, the Minions are actually voiced by Despicable Me creator and co-director Pierre Coffin. The French animator and voice actor has played the henchmen in every entry in the series so far, in addition to sharing directing duties on all the films, bar Minions: The Rise of Gru. In many ways, the fact that the Minions are only played by one man who is himself responsible for shaping the overall direction of the film explains how they have become so integral to the Minions and Despicable Me franchise.

What Language The Minions Speak

It's easy to dismiss the Minions' chatter as complete gibberish. However, linguistically, their style of communication is actually much more complex than it seems. Although Coffin himself is French, he actually speaks several different languages, all of which inform the Minions' unique dialect. In addition to French, English, Spanish, and even Indian elements are included. This explains why, even though most of what's said is nonsensical, it's almost always possible to understand the gist of what Minions may be saying throughout the Despicable Me series – wherever a viewer is from.

Coffin himself has revealed that when it comes to blending the various influences behind what language the Minions speak it's less about being explicitly silly and more to do with creating an overall tone. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Coffin revealed, "It's about finding a particular magical rhythm and melody that makes the nonsense make sense [via Bustle]." This highlights how, even though individual recognizable phrases can elicit a giggle, it's actually a much more considered process than meets the eye. In many ways, this explains the continued success of the Minions, beyond even Minions: The Rise of Gru – behind the silliness is actually some surprisingly complex linguistic thought.
