Sofia Carson starred in the Netflix film "Purple Hearts" in 2022. The drama centers around a musician, played by Carson, who marries a marine (played by Nicholas Galitzine) to get health insurance. The series was an instant success, debuting at No. 1 on the streaming site.

However, along with the film's popularity came criticism from a portion of the audience who felt it had racist and misogynistic themes. Carson stood by the project, which she not only acted in but also produced. Speaking to Variety, she said the film was more than just a love story. "It's two hearts, one red, one blue, two worlds apart, who are really raised to hate each other. Through the power of love, they learn to lead with empathy and compassion and love each other and turn into this beautiful shade of purple," she said. "We wanted to represent both sides as accurately as possible."

Along with some of the criticism "Purple Hearts" received, the film was also praised for its depiction of Type 1 diabetes. Carson said that she credits the director, Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, for setting the tone to make sure the film was honest about the condition. "The more that we learned about diabetes, the more that we wanted to really represent what it means to be a Type 1 diabetic in 2022 in the United States, as accurately and as vulnerably as possible," Carson stated, via Variety.
