WWE Backlash originally began as the post-WrestleMania event in 1999. This year, Backlash was renamed WrestleMania Backlash and it returned to its original spot as the PPV immediately following Mania. Though plenty of the WWE Universe didn't understand the need of renaming the pay-per-view and thought it was a very lame decision.

WWE Hall of Famer Edge made his shocking in-ring return last year at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view. He then began a very personal rivalry with Randy Orton that went through WrestleMania and then Backlash.

Their Backlash match was billed as "The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever" and went for almost 45 minutes. This was one of the matches that wrestling fans liked the most last year.

Backlash 2018 didn't receive an overall great rating. But the Intercontinental Title match between Seth Rollins and The Miz proved to the best match of the night.

Rollins had defeated Miz and Finn Balor at WrestleMania 34 for the title. Being the former champion, Miz invoked his rematch clause and demanded a title match at Backlash 2018. Though he once again ended up losing the bout.

AJ Styles became the Number One contender for Dean Ambrose's WWE Championship in 2016. He received a title shot at Backlash pay-per-view and ended up winning the title.

This was a very entertaining match with many near falls and it ended when Styles pushed Ambrose into the match referee and used a low blow to take off the title from Dean.

7 The Rock Vs Triple H - WWE Title (Backlash 2000) Rating: 8.41

At WrestleMania 2000, Vince McMahon betrayed The Rock to align himself with Triple H (who already had Stephanie McMahon by his side). The Rock later got a WWE Title shot at Backlash against HHH, but he was outnumbered by the McMahon-Helmsley Faction. So Linda announced that "Stone Cold" Steve Austin will be by Rock's side at the pay-per-view.

The McMahons tried to screw The Brahma Bull at the show several times, but he was saved in the end and went on to win the WWE Title. Then, he celebrated it with a couple of beers with Austin.

Cena got the roll-up victory in the end, but after that, Triple H beat the new champ, Edge, and even the referee with his favorite weapon, the sledgehammer.

Later, it was announced that Cena will defend the title against Edge at Backlash in a Last Man Standing match. The majority of the bout took place outside the ring and it ended when Big Show attacked Cena and choke-slammed him into a spotlight and he didn't stand up before the referee counted to 10.

"The Phenom" Undertaker won the 2007 Royal Rumble match and defeated Batista for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania.

Batista received a rematch for the belt at Backlash in a Last Man Standing Match. This was one of the bests matches between these two stars that ended in No Contest after both men failed to get up before the 10-count.

Benoit faced Shawn Michaels and Triple H in a triple threat match at Backlash 2004. After an outstanding 30-minute performance by all of the wrestlers, Chris won the match with the Sharpshooter.

Once again, John Cena was involved in a high-profile match at Backlash. He defended his WWE Title in a fatal four-way match against Edge, Orton, and Michaels.

In the final few minutes of the bout, many wrestlers executed their finishers. Edge speared Orton, while Cena gave an Attitude Adjustment to the Rated R Superstar. Michaels then hit Cena with a Sweet Chin Music who then fell on Orton and grabbed the pinfall victory.

Randy Orton and Cactus Jack tussled it out for the Intercontinental Championship at Backlash 2004. It was a Hardcore match. Orton's Evolution stablemates were banned from ringside as part of the stipulation.

There were many brutal moments in this match but in the end, The Viper retained his title after hitting Jack with an RKO on a barbed-wire-wrapped baseball bat. Unsurprisingly, this was the highest-rated match of the night.
