Due to some recent social media activity, there has been speculation about Sting possibly joining the AEW promotion.

It was later reported by Ryan Satin of Pro Wrestling Sheet that the wrestling legend is no longer under contract with WWE. This only fueled the rumors about Sting potentially heading to AEW.

AEW's Double or Nothing pay-per-view is only nine days away now, and some fans have been wondering about the possibility of Sting making a surprise appearance at the marquee event to award the TNT Championship to the winner of the Cody Rhodes-Lance Archer match.

Citing "sources close to" the WWE Hall of Famer, Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com reported that Sting wouldn't be "the person who presents the TNT Championship." Mike Tyson was later announced as the special guest who will present the title.

The Sting-to-AEW rumors began after a brief Twitter interaction with Archer. Cody also responded to news that Mattel was removing Sting action figures from its Legends 7 series because of circumstances out of their control. Johnson suggested that he was likely removed since Sting is no longer under contract with the WWE.

Johnson added that Rhodes' tweets appeared to be a way of generating buzz for AEW. However, Johnson suggests it "doesn't mean something can't happen later."

AEW has brought in a handful of WWE legends already, including Chris Jericho, Dustin Rhodes (previously known as Goldust), Jim Ross and Hall of Famers Jake "The Snake" Roberts and Billy Gun. They could certainly use Sting in a non-wrestling role, similar to the gig Roberts has.

Never Say Never

Sting has barely appeared on WWE programming ever since he retired at the 2016 Hall of Fame ceremony. Whether or not he signs a new deal with WWE remains to be seen, but it wouldn't be a surprise if AEW made a play for him. They've brought in a handful of all-time WWE greats already, so why stop now? Sting's popularity hasn't gone away, and he would be a great addition to their show - even in a non-wrestling capacity.
