Prior to Sunday night’s televised 2024 Grammys, the Recording Academy has been presenting a number of this year’s awards during the Grammys‘ premiere ceremony and posting those winners on the X social media platform (formerly known as Twitter).

However, when the Academy presented best rap song, the wrong name was posted to X.

Those watching the premiere ceremony, which streamed live on the Academy’s YouTube channel, saw that “Scientists & Engineers” by Killer Mike actually won.

But the Recording Academy mistakenly posted to X that Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice‘s “Barbie World” from the Barbie soundtrack was the winner before quickly deleting the post.

The deleted tweet — a screenshot has circulated online — caused an uproar from fans given the Grammy would’ve been Minaj’s first win. The rapper has been nominated 12 times but has never won. Minaj and Ice Spice’s Barbie song was also nominated for best song written for visual media, which went to fellow Barbie track “What Was I Made For?,” performed by Billie Eilish.

The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to the Recording Academy for comment. Minaj and Ice Spice have not publicly commented on the tweet.

“Why would the Grammys post about Nicki Minaj & ice spice n say they won the Grammys in a tweet & then just deleted it,” one user wrote. Whereas others argued the moment was further proof that the “industry is plotting against her.”

Minaj has previously spoken out against the Recording Academy. In 2022, the rapper criticized the Academy for categorizing her song “Super Freaky Girl” in the pop category instead of rap. Minaj called out the decision on social media writing, “They stay moving the goalposts when it comes to me. Why is the goalpost only ever moved when it’s Nicki?”

“It was done to decrease my chances of winning awards for ‘Super Freaky Girl.’ It was done to remove me from the category that they don’t want COMPETITION in!!!!!!! They are all scared to death of the success of that song & thought it would be super EASY for them (like it’s been for the last few years) but ‘SFG’ is such a global smash, certain members are AFRAID to keep it in the competition,” Minaj had posted on social media at the time.

Meanwhile in 2020, Minaj called out the Grammys for not giving her the best new artist award when she had seven songs charting on Billboard at the time. “Never forget the Grammys didn’t give me my best new artist award when I had 7 songs simultaneously charting on Billboard & bigger first week that any female rapper in the last decade- went on to inspire a generation. They gave it to the white man Bon Ever. #PinkFriday,” Minaj had tweeted at the time.

For this year’s Grammys, female acts make up seven of the eight nominees in the top three categories — with SZA leading with nine overall nominations followed by Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, Miley Cyrus and boygenius with six nods a piece.

The Grammy Awards telecast will air live from L.A. on Sunday on the CBS and Paramount+ With Showtime. Trevor Noah hosts.
