Randy Orton is celebrated as a true titan in the wrestling world. Yet, beneath the triumphs and championships lies a more complex story, one colored by challenges that extended beyond the ring. Amid his rise to stardom, Orton grappled with a shadowy reputation for backstage attitude and disruptive antics. He's been candid about wrestling personal demons during these times, hinting at a narrative that diverges from his glory in the squared circle. The veiled struggles he faced in those early years would eventually intersect with WWE's rigorous wellness policy. There have been a few chapters in the enigmatic undercurrents of Orton's journey, and the issues he confronted with the policy.
Randy Orton's Personal Demons
Randy Orton's journey in the WWE began with tremendous promise and potential. Randy seemed destined for greatness, and he achieved just that during his long career in the squared circle. However, along with his rapid ascent to stardom came whispers of a darker side. Orton's backstage attitude and antics often raised eyebrows among his colleagues and WWE officials. Reports circulated about his alleged arrogance, instances of showing disrespect to fellow wrestlers, and clashes with management. This behavior clashed with the collaborative spirit that wrestling thrives upon, and it wasn't long before rumors of his backstage behavior began to overshadow his in-ring accomplishments.
Orton's battles with his personal demons also became a talking point. These challenges not only showcased the complexities of navigating the wrestling world but also highlighted the importance of self-awareness, personal growth, and resilience in the face of adversity.

Randy Orton's Issues With WWE's Wellness Policy
The WWE's wellness policy is a critical component of the organization's commitment to maintaining a safe and drug-free environment for its performers. This policy aims to ensure the well-being and health of wrestlers while also upholding the integrity of the sport. For Randy Orton, however, adhering to this policy proved to be a challenge, resulting in significant consequences. Orton's first brush with the wellness policy came in August 2006. Orton had already been suspended for 60 days before the violation in April 2006, which was a response to his disorderly conduct backstage and struggles with anger management. However, in August, he was caught smoking marijuana backstage by allegedly none other than Bruce Prichard himself, who ended up reporting Orton. While the act of smoking marijuana alone might not have warranted a suspension, the context of violating WWE's policy brought consequences. Orton was made to still do in-ring work but without any pay for 30 days as a result of this violation.
In 2012, Orton's issues with the wellness policy took a more serious turn. He tested positive for marijuana, signaling a violation of the policy once again. However, it was the additional positive test for Dianabol, an anabolic steroid, that escalated the situation. This violation resulted in a $2500 fine and a 60-day suspension. The repercussions were more severe this time, as Orton was taken off all TV appearances and house shows during his suspension. This was his second violation. For a wrestler, the policy operates on a three-strikes system. The first violation results in a 30-day suspension, the second triggers a 60-day suspension, and a third infraction results in termination from the company. During suspensions, wrestlers do not receive any compensation. Orton hasn't violated this policy again. WWE is known to have several rules and getaways for its part-timing or top wrestlers to make sure the violation of this policy doesn't affect them.

Randy Orton On Seeking Redemption And Sobriety
In a candid conversation on Steve Austin's Broken Skull Sessions podcast, Randy Orton addressed his struggles head-on. He spoke about his journey toward redemption, expressing his commitment to leading a sober life. Orton shared how he had enrolled in anger management classes, a step towards addressing the issues that had marred his career earlier. He said, “That 60 days happened for reasons. During that 60 days, I did some other sh*t that landed me a spot where I needed some help. I got the help, I came back, and I still wasn’t right. About a year, in the middle of 2007 where I was working with Edge and I think [John] Cena, where I came out of that funk and luckily everything was alright."
Randy further revealed, “My problems came to a head when I decided to smoke a joint and someone smelled it and stooged me off. You know who you are, so if you’re reading this, thanks. But I also had a few outbursts of anger on the road. I get loud and verbally abusive. But I’ve nipped that part of me in the bud. I attended an anger management clinic in Atlanta. It cost $15,000 for a four-week stay. I had to live down there on the campus. The first week I was there, I was like, 'OK, I’ll do what I have to do to get out of here.' But then I started to realize, wow, I was wrong in a lot of these situations. I just got this reputation of being hard to work with, being a d**k, and everything in the book. But the truth is, I don’t flip out anymore.”
In the past few years, Randy has become one of the most beloved wrestlers among the WWE universe.
