Professional Background

Dr. Nathan Tofteland is an Associate Professor at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita and the Program Director of the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program, which will begin training gastroenterology fellows during academic year 2022-2023. In addition, he serves as the Division Director for Internal Medicine/Pediatrics.

Dr. Tofteland completed medical education at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, followed by dual training in the combined Internal Medicine/Pediatric Residency Program at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita. Following residency, he worked as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine and served as the Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Residency Program. He subsequently completed fellowship training in gastroenterology at the University of Kansas School of Medicine – Kansas City campus in 2014. He served as the Program Director of the Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Residency Program from July 2014 through November 2021, when he transitioned to the role of Division Director of the Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Division.

Dr. Tofteland has a broad spectrum digestive disease practice, with particular clinical interests in inflammatory bowel disease, advanced endoscopy and therapeutics, as well as general gastroenterology and hepatology. In addition to his primary academic and community gastroenterology clinical practice, he serves part-time as a staff physician for the Robert J Dole VA Medical Center as the Chief of Endoscopy.
