Highlights

  • Big-name wrestling contracts are expiring in 2023 and 2024, including Seth Rollins, Becky Lynch, Drew McIntyre, Sheamus, and potentially MJF.
  • MJF has confirmed that he has not yet re-signed with AEW and will assess his options after the upcoming pay-per-view.
  • MJF has expressed his love for AEW but acknowledges that he must think about what feels right and means the most to him when choosing his next company. WWE offers a big spotlight, but AEW sees him as the face of the company and a key to their success.

2023 and 2024 are the years of big name wrestling contracts coming to an end. Jade Cargill left AEW for WWE this year. Dominik and Rey Mysterio just signed new deals with WWE. Seth Rollins, Becky Lynch, Drew McIntyre, and Sheamus are all expiring next year. The biggest one, however, might be MJF, just because no one can be certain what he's going to do in January. Though a recent report suggested WWE thought MJF had already secretly signed with AEW, this isn't the case.

In an interview with Jimmy Traina on the SI Media podcast, MJF confirmed that he has yet to re-sign with AEW. He said:

“I’ve been saying the same thing (about my contract expiration date). I never lied. January 1st, 2024. When stuff like that gets leaked out, it makes me laugh because I remember something leaked out about Cody (Rhodes) having secretly re-signed and then he showed up (in WWE). Something got leaked out about, you know, CM Punk and Tony Khan or you know… I think fans leak out things that they want to be true. I love AEW, I wanna stay in AEW. After this pay-per-view (Worlds End), it’s time to assess the situation for a professional setting. So… not yet (I haven’t re-signed).

"Do I think in some aspects, AEW fits me like a glove more so than anywhere else? Yeah, I do. Could an argument be made the other way around? Yeah, I’m sure. These are all things I have to think about. What I do know, whatever company I pick, it will be because it feels right and it means the most to me." (h/t POST Wrestling)

While MJF has brought prestige to the AEW World Championship with his epic title reign, it might need to come to an end soon.

Will MJF Stay With AEW Or Go To WWE?

MJF was also asked about a recent interview where Cody Rhodes says he thinks MJF will end up in WWE one day. MJF said:

"Cody Rhodes felt that way. In Cody Rhodes’ mind and opinion, that was his way of putting over a friend, a prodigy, a former co-worker, a former protégé… So, I still talk to Cody to this day. He’s a great guy. He’s doing great things over there, I’m doing great things over here."

MJF grew up a huge fan of WWE and Triple H. He even tried to get on Tough Enough once. WWE gives him the biggest spotlight possible, but also a lot of uncertainty. In AEW, MJF is the face of the company and the one who can turn their fortunes around. If AEW loses MJF, they are in big trouble. MJF's next match is at Worlds End when Samoa Joe challenges him for his AEW World Championship. Though MJF's contract expires two days later, don't look for him to be gone on January 1, as it's doubtful he'll drop the title to Joe, and there's still the Devil storyline that needs resolved.
