Thor is one of the oldest living characters within the MCU, so how old is he through Phase 3? Here's an explainer based on his Asgardian heritage.
Thor is one of the oldest figures featured in the Marvel Cinematic Universe based on his Asgardian heritage. 37-year-old Chris Hemsworth has been playing the God of Thunder since 2011 with the release of Thor. To date, Hemsworth appeared in a total of eight MCU installments, including three solo films. After spending years as a member of the Avengers, Thor's future depended on the fight against Thanos. Now that the Mad Titan is in the rearview mirror, a new chapter will begin with Thor's MCU journey as he serves as the focus of 2022's Thor: Love and Thunder. So how old is the powerful Asgardian up to Phase 4?
When viewers were first introduced to Thor, he was a cocky young man ready to take over the throne of Asgard. Based on his entitled behavior, his father Odin stripped him of his powers, including his hammer Mjolnir, and exiled him to earth. While there, Thor got a first-hand lesson on his worthiness and potential. Based on his superhuman abilities, Thor went on to become a key member of the Avengers. Not only was he a viable protector on the frontlines, but his knowledge of species among the galaxy became advantageous against otherwordly threats. With Odin long gone and Asgard decimated, Thor emerged as a hopeful leader — until Thanos crushed his mental state. After a bit of a retirement, Thor was able to regain his confidence to assist in defeating Thanos once and for all in Avengers: Endgame.
Considering Thor is a demigod from Asgard, it was understood that the character was much older than a typical human. Asgardians are an alien race that possesses advanced forms of magical abilities. Aside from their powers, they also have longevity, aging much slower than other living beings. Though it wasn't directly stated early in the MCU, Thor mentioned to Rocket Raccoon in Avengers: Infinity War that he was 1,500 years old. With that revelation, it's simple to yield the character's age throughout the cinematic franchise due to his 518 AD birth year.
Breaking Down Thor's Age Throughout The MCU
In Infinity War, it was unclear if Thor was exactly 1,500 at that point in the timeline in 2018 or if he was providing a ballpark. Granted, considering his slow aging process, a decade passing to Thor wouldn't be the same for someone like Tony Stark or Bruce Banner. If he was 1,500 in Infinity War, Thor would have been 1,493 when he was initially introduced. The Avengers took place the following year while his second solo movie, Thor: The Dark World, was set in 2013, making him 1,495. While continuing with this pattern, Thor was 1,497 in Avengers: Age of Ultron, 1,499 in Thor: Ragnarok, and 1,505 when he helped decimate Thanos in Endgame, which was set in 2023.
How Long Thor Is Expected To Live As An Asgardian
The lifespan of a typical Asgardian is said to be approximately 5,000-years-old in the MCU. Based on Thor's age, he's basically in his thirties in human years, proving that he still has a lot of life ahead of him. Odin was adamant at the fact that Asgardians experience death just like humans do, albeit in a different span. Since Thor isn't an ordinary Asgardian, it's possible that he lives a few thousand years beyond the life expectancy. Odin was around 10,000-years-old when he died in Ragnarok. Either way, Thor still has a future in the MCU.
