Troubled Early Life
Jerome Max Kelii Holloway was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, growing up in Waianae. His heritage is a mix of Native Hawaiian and Samoan descent. Challenges marked Holloway's upbringing, as his parents, particularly his mother Missy Kapoi, struggled with substance abuse, with her being a crystal meth consumer before eventually recovering. His father, Mark Holloway, was reportedly abusive and left the family when Max was around 11 years old. In the absence of his father, Max found a father figure in his grandfather.
Holloway's journey in combat sports began in 2007 when he started training in kickboxing at the age of 15. Despite facing personal challenges, he remained focused on his education and graduated from Waianae High School in 2010.
Max has two brothers, one of whom, Clement Holloway Jr., reportedly faced legal issues after allegedly breaking into a woman's home, assaulting her, and fleeing the scene. His other brother, Sam Kapoi, is his half-brother. Unfortunately, Sam Kapoi has also encountered legal troubles and was sentenced to an 18-year prison term.
Early MMA Career
At the age of 19, Holloway entered the world of mixed martial arts, making his debut on September 11, 2010, where he secured a victory via decision. His dynamic fighting style, incorporating a diverse range of flying and spinning kicks, knees, and elbows, quickly earned him recognition as a featherweight prospect.
In the early stages of his career, Holloway showcased his skills with a notable split decision victory over Harris Sarimento, a seasoned veteran of Strikeforce and WEC, on March 12, 2011. This impressive win granted him the lightweight championship belt for the Hawaii-based X-1 promotion, solidifying his status as a rising talent in the sport.
Early UFC Career
After compiling a promising 4-0 record within his first three years in MMA, Holloway earned a coveted spot in the UFC. However, his debut would prove to be a formidable challenge as he faced the seasoned fighter Dustin Poirier, who boasted an impressive 11-1 record. Despite his best efforts, Holloway suffered a quick defeat via submission in the first round.
Undeterred by this setback, Holloway demonstrated resilience by bouncing back with three consecutive victories. However, his momentum was halted when he encountered Dennis Bermudez, resulting in a close split decision loss.
In his subsequent bout, Holloway faced off against the emerging star Conor McGregor. Holloway fell short, losing via decision. These early experiences in the UFC would serve as valuable lessons for Holloway who would become one of the greatest fighters in the sport.
Historic Winning Streak To UFC Title
Holloway embarked on a remarkable journey, achieving a historic 13-fight winning streak in the UFC. Along this incredible run, he faced formidable opponents such as future champion Charles Oliveira and former titleholder Anthony Pettis, emerging victorious each time.
His outstanding performances earned him a well-deserved title shot against the legendary Jose Aldo. In a thrilling showdown, Holloway showcased his skills and resilience, ultimately securing victory via technical knockout in the third round, capturing the UFC Featherweight Championship.
Holloway faced Aldo once again in a highly anticipated rematch and finished the Brazilian legend in a similar fashion.
Alexander Volkanovski Trilogy And Top Contender Status
After an impressive reign as UFC Featherweight Champion, Holloway faced Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 245, resulting in a disappointing loss and relinquishment of his title. Despite a closely contested rematch, Holloway again fell short, this time by split decision.
In their third encounter, Volkanovski showcased his dominance, seemingly closing the chapter on their rivalry with a decisive victory.
Despite no longer holding the title, Holloway continued to assert himself as the top contender in the division, consistently defeating the best talent as a main event attraction. His remarkable performances and unwavering competitive spirit solidified his status as one of the most respected fighters in the UFC Featherweight division.
