It Follows' entity takes many different forms while stalking its prey in the 2014 horror movie; here's every shape that the being takes throughout.
Here's every form taken by the demonic Entity in It Follows. Of course, that's much debate about whether the entity is even a demon. It bears many similarities to one, but part of the reason It Follows works so well is that so little information is given about how the creature at its center functions. The only things seemingly known for certain about It Follows' entity is that its curse is passed on through sex, and when it eventually kills its latest target, it heads back to get the previous one and so on.
Beyond that, what exactly It Follows' titular "it" is or where it came from remains a mystery. With no It Follows sequel seemingly on the horizon, that mystery is likely to stay unsolved, but as some other instances of horror movies filling in monster backstories prove, sometimes the mystery is the better option. One other aspect of the creature that seems apparent is a sadistic side, given its tendency to take forms sure to emotionally upset its prey.
That tendency may not be entirely born of sadism, as in a few cases it also seems to be trying to confuse its victim long enough to get caught. Whatever the reason the It Follows monster chooses a particular form to take, the result always has one thing in common; being terrifying. Here's a guide to It Follows entity's every form it takes in the movie.
The Girl In The Yellow Dress
The audience doesn't get to see the entity's initial appearance in It Follows because Jay doesn't, and she's the focal character. On her date with Hugh/Jeff, before the two have had sex, he sees a girl in a yellow dress behind them at the movie theater. It's precisely because Jay doesn't see her that Hugh knows he's in serious trouble.
The Naked Woman
The first form It Follows' entity takes after Hugh has passed the curse on to Jay Height (Maika Monroe) is of a naked middle-aged woman. She's not shown close or long enough to make a positive identification, but the best guess based on characters seen in the film is Hugh's mom. That wouldn't have any immediate significance to Jay but could be one last taunt directed at its previous target.
The Old Woman
One of the mysterious It Follows entity's most memorable forms was its second onscreen appearance, an old woman wearing a nightgown who slowly but surely pursue's Jay at school. There's no evidence this is another character seen anywhere in It Follows, so its significance to the entity's pursuit of Jay is up for debate.
The Home Invader
The monster in It Follows seems to enjoy using naked forms to go after its prey, which makes sense given its links to sexuality. This next form appears in Jay's home, proving nowhere is safe for her. This time the woman is topless but also looks to have been brutally beaten, even to the point of missing teeth and she also urinates on the floor. This form isn't identifiable, although considering her appearance, the entity could be using this form to represent sexual trauma.
The Tall Man
Perhaps the most striking of the entity's disguises in It Follows, the tall man - not to be confused with The Tall Man villain from Phantasm - is a towering figure that terrifies Jay by appearing behind her friend Yara as she walks into Jay's bedroom. Again, the tall man doesn't look like any other character seen in the movie, so outside of being scary, the significance of this form to Jay is unclear. However, it could actually be a subtle allusion to Jay's unresolved issues with her unnamed, deceased father Mr. Height.
Yara
After a night of terror Jay, her sister, her neighbor Greg, and their friends all head off to the beach to put some distance between themselves - which if someone had enough resources, could be an easy way to defeat It Follows' curse - and the slow-moving entity. That ends when It Follows' resident stalker walks up behind Jay on the beach, disguised as her friend Yara. This form is at least more clothed than usual, but that doesn't make using one of Jay's closest allies any less creepy.
The Creepy Child
After "Yara" arrives and proceeds to attack Jay, she and her gang run for refuge inside a hut. The entity busts open a hole in the door, then comes after them as a creepy young boy. It's easy to overlook who this is during a normal It Follows viewing, but it's Jay's neighbor, the one who was leering at her while she relaxed in the pool.
The Beach Walker
One of the more curious forms the entity takes comes after the beach hut, as it becomes a teenage girl and chases after Jay, who responds by hopping into Greg's car. Of course, it keeps pursuing her relentlessly, making It Follows feel like The Terminator in that respect. Most viewers seem to agree this girl is Annie, the girl who's brutally killed by the entity in It Follows' opening, and likely the last person Hugh passed the curse to before Jay.
Greg
From the moment Jay's neighbor Greg began offering her help, it was clear he was attracted to her. Since he also doesn't believe her about the It Follows entity's curse, he's happy to make the "chivalrous" offer to sleep with her and take the curse off her hands. He comes to regret that a few days later when the entity breaks into his house, first taking his own form for itself.
Greg's Mom
After turning into Greg, the entity then transforms into his mother, who's naked under an open robe. Greg doesn't realize it's not his mom, opens the door, and gets murdered in what's easily It Follows' most disturbing death scene.
The Naked Climber
This next form taken by the entity in It Follows is another that's extremely naked. Bizarrely, Jay sees him standing atop the roof, and not actively pursuing her, which is out of character. Evidence also points to this form being Jay's grandfather, who's seen in a family photo earlier in the movie.
Jay's Father
Jay and her remaining comrades attempt to make a stand against the entity at a local indoor pool, and of course, the creature twists the knife by making its final form during this confrontation as Jay's deceased father. Mr. Height's fate isn't explained in It Follows but he's clearly not in the picture anymore. His identity is also confirmed by a family photo.
The Sidewalk Stalker
It Follows - which connects back to the original Evil Dead in a subtle way - ends on an ambiguous note, as it's unclear if Jay managed to truly defeat the entity. A person, somewhat resembling Paul, Jay's friend and formerly unrequited lover, can be seen walking in the pair's direction down the sidewalk. Is that the entity, or just another person walking? Viewers continue to debate the answer.
