One thing that is sure to be noticed in Baldur's Gate 3 is the insurmountable amount of puzzles that must be solved in order to make progress throughout the game, one of which is the Riddle of the Night. Though this puzzle isn't one of the most difficult ones to be found in the game, it can get a little confusing if you overthink it.

The Riddle of the Night puzzle in Baldur's Gate 3 is going to be found in the Silent Library and pertains to a pedestal in the room. The riddle itself states simply "What can silence the Nightsong?" and players will receive no more information than that. Solving the riddle will require a specific book that can be found in the Silent Library.

Where To Find The Riddle Of The Night

The Riddle of the Night Pedestal in Baldur's Gate 3

The Riddle of the Night as stated, is found in the Silent Library in the Gauntlet of Shar. In order to reach the room, a gate leading to the back of the room will need to be unlocked. There will be several enemies in Baldur's Gate 3 that block the path to the riddle itself including Justiciars and The Librarian. Though the Justiciars will not pose much of a threat, the Librarian is a little more annoying as they personally prohibit the use of magic by anyone in the library, including other enemies.

If relying primarily on magic, it's best to track down the Librarian and take them out first, so magic can be used on the remaining enemies, if having a difficult time beating them without it. There are also several traps to look out for in the library including Gas Pit Tentacles, Button Traps, and Bookshelf Traps. All of these can do a decent amount of damage but are easily disarmed as long as they are spotted in advance. With all obstacles out of the way, players should have no problem reaching the Silent Library puzzle room in Baldur's Gate 3.

What Can Silence The Nightsong Solution

The Teachings of Loss Book in Baldur's Gate 3

Once reaching the room, the pedestal in the middle will be inscribed with the Riddle of the Night. The Riddle reads "What can silence the Nightsong?" and though it seems pretty vague, the solution is rather simple. There will be an icon indicating the solution which involves a specific book that can be obtained in the main portion of the Silent Library in Baldur's Gate 3. Specifically, the book in question is Teachings of Loss: The Nightsinger and it can be found relatively close by.

It's going to be found on a bookshelf that is located southeast of the current room at the coordinates X: -771 Y: -742. The library shelf housing the book in question will be blocked initially but can be reached with a successful Dexterity Check with a difficulty class of 14. For those having a hard time tracking down the shelf, Perception of Investigation skills can help locate it easily. Once found, the book will contain a short paragraph of text relating to the Riddle of the Night. As long as the correct book was found, it should read,

"What can silence the Nightsong? Only the Nightsinger herself – Shar. Mistress of the Night. Lady of Loss. Her names are many, but her purpose is simplicity itself: light was a mistake, and life is an illusion – a discordant song composed of lies, breaking the peace of oblivion. Put your faith in Shar as your champion; allow her to silence the false song in your heart and return you to her embrace. Nothingness is all you need. The eternal womb, where you are safe in the darkness, with Mother Shar.”

If all of this information matches, congratulations, you have found the correct book. Though many may believe that the book itself is just a clue towards the solution, since it clearly states that Shar is what silences the Nightsong, they would be incorrect. The book itself is actually the solution and the contents of it are merely just information for the player. Take the book back to the pedestal and place it to solve the riddle. Once placed successfully, another door will open in the back of the room leading players to a valuable reward, a powerful Baldur's Gate 3 weapon.

Riddle Of The Night Reward

Head through the newly opened door to find the Spear of Night item sitting on an altar in the small room. The Spear of Night might not make much of a first impression, but it is a powerful weapon that will be needed later on in the story. Once reaching the end of the dungeon,Baldur's Gate 3 companion Shadowheart will make a decision between killing or sparing the Nightsong. Regardless of her choice, the Spear of Night will play a factor in either decision. Beware that one of these choices will result in keeping the Spear of Night and one will result in losing it for good.

Though the Spear of Night weapon in Baldur's Gate 3is the main reward for players who solve the Riddle of the Night, there are a couple of other items to be obtained in the room as well. In the room also lies a Dark Justiciar Plate and Dark Justiciar Helmet which can both be collected.

They're both solid upgrade pieces should players decide to take advantage of them, however, those who do not favor them will not be missing out on much as there are much better armor pieces to come later.

Now that the riddle has been solved and the Spear of Night has been obtained, players can proceed on with their adventure to complete whatever task they desire. Keep in mind that though there is a traditional way to follow the story of the game, there is no wrong way to go about completing them, so take time to enjoy some of the areas and uncover all they have to offer before rushing through some of the main objectives in Baldur's Gate 3.
