Advertisements are a normal part of using an Amazon Kindle. But they don't have to be. Here's how to easily remove ads from your Kindle.
Amazon's Kindle e-readers are easy to use, competitively priced... and come with annoying ads that seem impossible to get rid of. While it may not be immediately apparent, Amazon does have a way for users to remove these. As irritating as they can be, advertisements are a regular part of using the internet these days. From news websites, social media platforms, streaming apps, etc., online ads are everywhere.
Advertisements are also frequently seen on phones, tablets, and other devices. Samsung, for example, is notorious for showing ads in its first-party apps and with push notifications. Apple does this too (albeit to a lesser extent), using its apps and notifications to promote its subscription services and deals on new hardware.
Unfortunately, ads are also a common part of using an Amazon Kindle. Users don't see pop-up ads while reading a book or navigating their Kindle settings. Instead, Amazon shows ads on the Kindle lock screen. After turning off the Kindle's display when you're done reading, the screen instantly refreshes to show an ad for a new book. It's not a huge intrusion to the user experience, but it can still be annoying to have ads shoved in your face every time you pick up the Kindle.
Removing Ads From Your Kindle Takes Just A Few Seconds
On a more positive note, Amazon does make it very easy to remove ads from its Kindle devices. Head to the Amazon website on your computer, log into your account, move your mouse over the 'Account & Lists' button, and click 'Content & Devices.' Click the 'Devices' tab at the top of the page, click 'Kindle,' select the Kindle you want to remove ads from, and then click the 'Remove offers' button. This displays a pop-up asking you to confirm that you want to remove ads from the Kindle. You can click 'Keep Special Offers,' to keep the ads or click 'End Offers and Pay the Fee' to remove them. Clicking the 'End Offers' button will charge your Amazon account $20 (plus applicable tax) to remove ads from that device. If you're OK paying that fee, click the button and ads should be removed from your Kindle within seconds.
It's also worth mentioning that you can purchase a Kindle without ads in the first place. While Amazon defaults all Kindle models to showing these ads, there is a way to change this before purchasing one. From the Amazon app or website, find the Kindle you want to purchase and select it. On the product page for the Kindle, scroll down until you see something that says 'Offer Type: Ad-Supported.' Select 'Without Ads,' wait for the page to refresh, and you can buy a Kindle that doesn't come with any built-in ads to speak of.
Just keep in mind that doing this will increase the price of your Kindle by the same $20. The baseline Kindle is promoted as being $89, but if you choose the model without ads, the price shoots up to $109. This also applies to the Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Oasis. It's unfortunate that removing ads requires a $20 fee regardless of how you buy an Amazon Kindle, but at the very least, removing ads is easy if you're inclined to do so.
