Early returns on WWE choosing to run with Jey Uso against Roman Reigns has paid off extremely well for the company. Terms like "Breakout star of the year" and "hitting home runs" are just a couple of the ways people have been describing Jey's work since getting what could the opportunity of a lifetime. Some are wondering if Jey Uso could be a main event guy after beating both AJ Styles and Daniel Bryan clean as part of the road that led to his cousin. That's a fair question as he's been that good.
Of course, all of this is being done to help get Reigns over as WWE's top heel, but the rub it's getting Jey because of his outstanding work is obvious. WWE has noticed, the fans have noticed and other performers have noticed.
One of the interesting questions will be how this affect Jey's brother Jimmy? Out with an injury, Jimmy has shown his face from time to time in this storyline and he too has been excellent in his brief appearances. But, one has to wonder if WWE thinks Jey has a future as a singles star based on what he's shown to date. If so, where does that leave the other Uso?
Now that Jey is aligned with Roman, perhaps none of this matters. But, that can't be what Jey wants. While there's an honor and loyalty to the Uso tag team, it's hard to imagine any wrestler not dreaming about one day being the WWE Champion. To do that, he needs to be his own man and do his own thing. As this storyline unfolds, there will come a time when Jey, once again, is separate from Reigns. What then?
WWE Owes It To The Usos
If there's one thing that's clear, WWE owes Jey an opportunity to make a run if he wants to. When the original idea for this drama plays itself to its scheduled conclusion, one should assume Jey will get his chance to shine.
As for Jimmy, at the very least, he should get an opportunity to show he's got the goods too. Again, his work thus far in this story has been good. We've just not seen as much of it.
Jey Uso may be the best "accidental" discovery WWE has made in months when it comes to singles action. Could Jimmy be as good when it's his turn? Will he even get a shot to prove it?
