Indiana Jones is one of the roles that made Harrison Ford a Hollywood legend, but several other actors have played the character over the years. When it comes to cinematic adventurers, most people's first thought is probably Dr. Jones, an archaeology professor that spends his time outside the classroom retrieving rare artifacts, as well as getting into life-threatening situations. Equipped with his trusty bullwhip and usually wearing a dusty fedora, Indiana Jones is an iconic figure in pop culture history.

Ford has portrayed Indy in four different films to date, all directed by Steven Spielberg. Indy's youth was also explored in the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles TV series, and the character has starred in over a dozen video games, some for computers and some for consoles. Jones has also punched his way into the literary realm, expanding the franchise with multiple novels and comic books. In 2022, Ford will return again to the lead role in a fifth Indiana Jones film, directed by James Mangold.

Despite his advanced age, both Ford and Spielberg have remained adamant that no younger actor is planned to take over playing Indy in future films. It would seem the character will retire whenever Ford does. However, he hasn't played the role exclusively, as several different actors have stepped in to portray Indy at varying ages.

River Phoenix

River Phoenix The Last Crusade

Older brother of Joker star Joaquin Phoenix, River Phoenix portrayed a 13-year-old version of Indiana Jones during the prologue of 1989's Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. During this sequence, Phoenix's Indy acquired his trademark fedora, first used a bullwhip, and became afraid of snakes. Sadly, River Phoenix died of a drug overdose in 1993, at the age of 23.

Sean Patrick Flanery

Carrier quit acting in 2000, but some of his other credits include The Witches of Eastwick and My Blue Heaven.

George Hall

George Hall in Young Indiana Jones Chronicles
