The Clueless reboot TV show, intended to be a contemporary mystery series that centers on Dionne, is no longer moving forward at Peacock.
The Clueless reboot TV series, which was being developed by Peacock, is not moving forward. Starring Alicia Silverstone, Clueless was released in 1995 and quickly became a cult classic. Written and directed by Amy Heckerling, Clueless chronicles the adventures of Cher Horowitz (Silverstone), who is idolized for her popularity and wealth among the social circles of Bronson Alcott High School. Flanked by her best friend Dionne (Stacey Dash), Cher scopes out new girl Tai (Brittney Murphy), in an attempt to give her an extreme makeover.
Based loosely on Jane Austen’s novel Emma, Clueless had a massive influence on fashion trends, jargon, and self-expression. Since its release over twenty years ago, Clueless has remained influential in pop culture and spawned a TV sitcom (sans Silverstone), comic books, and a Broadway musical. Last year, Peacock and CBS TV studios announced they would give the film a makeover in the form of a TV series, with a twist on the original plotline. Set in modern times, the Clueless reboot series would center on Dionne instead of queen-bee Cher. Now, it appears Dionne may not get a chance to be in the spotlight.
Per THR, Peacock has officially passed on the Clueless reboot TV show. Penned by Jordan Reddout and Gus Hickey, the Clueless series was formulated as a contemporary mystery series and follows Dionne, who must step up as the most popular girl in high school after Cher mysteriously vanishes. Reportedly, Peacock passed over on multiple scripts in the production pipeline, including Clueless. However, no direct reason was offered.
As it stands, CBS Studios continues to have its eye on the popular property and may attempt to redevelop and update the film. Of course, fans of the iconic Clueless film were wondering if any of the original cast members would make a cameo in the reboot series. However, it appears the possibility of seeing Silverstone or Paul Rudd (who played Josh Lucas in the film) in the series described as “a baby pink and bisexual blue-tinted, tiny sunglasses-wearing, oat milk latte, and Adderall-fueled look at what happens when queen bee Cher disappears and her lifelong No. 2 Dionne steps into Cher’s vacant Air Jordans” is unlikely.
Given that it’s been two decades since Clueless shook the teen world, it was ideal timing for Peacock to feature the series that would have doled out a makeover to the storyline. Recently, Peacock has revived numerous properties from past decades, such as Psych, Saved by the Bell, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. For this reason, it would serve as the ideal platform for a fresh take on the classic Clueless property. In fact, it’s a little strange Peacock has passed on the entire concept. For now, fans of Clueless can hope that CBS Studios opts to officially move forward with a different adaptation and feature the spoiled Beverly Hills teens making a comeback.
