Both T.C. Carson and Christopher Judge’s performances as Kratos in the God of War series brought something unique and different to the character.
Despite changing the voice actor for Kratos in God of War from T.C. Carson to Christopher Judge, both actors' portrayals are perfect in their own right. Released in 2005 for the PlayStation 2, God of War made an impression with its visceral combat and dark portrayal of Greek mythology. Players followed the scorned Spartan soldier Kratos on his quest for revenge against not only the god of war, Ares, but the entirety of the Greek pantheon. Carson voiced Kratos in most of the God of War games, his last portrayal coming in God of War: Ascension, before being switched out for Christopher Judge.
Best known for his time on the television show Stargate SG-1 as Teal'c, Christopher Judge voices Kratos in God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok. Set in Norse mythology and sometime after the original God of War games, God of War (2018) follows an older Kratos who raises his son, Atreus, after his wife's death. Unlike the previous God of War titles, this iteration is a little toned down and has a more cinematic and introspective story. Moreover, while more focused and grounded, the combat invokes the visceral action of past God of War games. While it's easy to draw lines in the sand on which Kratos was voiced better, each actor portrays the character in different settings.
T.C. Carson and Christopher Judge's performances as Kratos in God of War are perfect and bring different narrative avenues to the character. Carson brought the fury and rage as Kratos that utilized his range as a voice actor in the pre-PS4 and PS5 God of War games. On the other hand, Judge brought a more grizzled and wiser Kratos along with a physical presence to the character through motion capture. Both voice actors portray the character during different points in his life and do excellent jobs in the process.
Carson And Judge Developed God Of War's Kratos In Different Ways
Across the God of War games, Kratos was in a murderous rage, cutting down all those who stood before him, friend and foe alike. T.C. Carson excelled in portraying this theme while adding depth to Kratos' motivations. Carson explored Kratos' anger with a performance rooted in self-hate. However, as the games progressed, the storytelling moved past mere revenge. As a result, Kratos needed to be developed to portray the fury while leaving room for further development.
Christopher Judge's portrayal in God of War (2018) - and presumably the sequel set to release in 2022, God of War Ragnarok - adds and builds on Carson's performance rather than disregarding it entirely. As a wiser Kratos, Judge portrayed the reluctant and stoic nature of the character with a paternalistic focus. Moreover, God of War (2018) utilized Judge's physical presence and acting through performance capture, giving further depth and immersion to his portrayal of Kratos.
T.C. Carson and Christopher Judge bring different and unique versions of Kratos to God of War. The former establishes the foundation of Kratos as a character while subverting the theme of self-hate to new levels. At the same time, Judge brought another dynamic to Kratos while utilizing new technology in his portrayal. While it's easy to choose sides on which voice actor was best for Kratos in God of War's Greek and Norse storylines, both actors perfectly portrayed him during different moments in his life.
