Kansas City
Inclement weather announcement issued Jan 8 at 2:05 p.m.
In anticipation of a snow event beginning this afternoon and continuing overnight projected to bring strong wind gusts and blowing snow, KU Medical Center is preemptively declaring Tuesday, Jan. 9, as an inclement weather day.
To ensure the safety of our faculty, staff and students, the Kansas City campus (university only) will be closed. All employees and students are expected to stay home unless they are identified as critical to maintaining campus operations during the period of inclement weather. Depending on the timing of the weather event this afternoon, supervisors overseeing employees on campus should use their discretion in response to individual employee requests to leave campus early.
As a reminder, since this is the first inclement weather event of the season, all employees and students should adhere to the following processes:
Faculty and staff
- Only employees identified as critical to maintaining campus operations will be allowed on campus.
- Employees who currently work remotely will continue to work as normal.
- Employees who would normally be on campus will be expected to work remotely. Those who are not able to work from home will be paid an inclement weather day.
- Employees with critical laboratory research that cannot be suspended should contact Dr. Peter Smith or Dr. John Stanford to coordinate access. If you are conducting human subjects research, please consider rescheduling visits if possible.
Students
- Classes will be moved to a virtual learning format, where possible.
- Students in a clinical placement on the KU Medical Center/health system campus do not report to their assigned schedule.
- Students in clinical placements outside the medical center/health system campus in Wyandotte (KS), Johnson (KS), Jackson (MO) and Clay (MO) counties also should follow KU Medical Center’s inclement weather process.
- Students will receive additional information from their schools and/or programs.
Parking
- Critical employees on campus should park in P4 via the Rainbow entrance. Do not park in surface lots.
- Shuttle service will not be operational.
Remember we may also notify the campus regarding inclement weather updates via RAVE texts. If you have not opted in to receive RAVE notices, you should opt in now. We also will use local media outlets WDAF (Fox4), KMBC-TV 9, KSHB-41 and/or KCTV-5 only if inclement weather results in our delaying or canceling classes or closing the campus. Consult the inclement weather policy and procedures for additional information.
If a notification is not issued, you should plan on business as usual for Wednesday, Jan. 10. It is not appropriate to call police dispatch or human resources for weather-related inquiries. Dispatch lines are dedicated for emergency and safety issues only.
Note: The University of Kansas Health System never closes. Health system employees should follow hospital protocol.
