Highlights
- Asuka's injury adds to the curse of the Women's Tag Team Championships, bringing more bad fortune to title holders in WWE history.
- It's unclear how serious Asuka's foot injury is, but if she can't compete, Dakota Kai could step in to replace her at WrestleMania.
- Asuka's injury might have occurred when she landed awkwardly during a match, potentially impacting her ability to participate in the event.
The curse seems to have struck the Women's Tag Team Championships again. During Friday's episode of SmackDown, Asuka appeared to have injured her foot, as she was limping through the show's final segment as the blue brand closed with Damage CTRL attacking Bayley. It's not said that the injury is incredibly serious, but it could be a broken ankle, which might take her out of WrestleMania 40 plans and has seen WWE remove Asuka from live events.
Asuka is as tough as they come, but you can see in the video below where she's visibly limping and trying to be part of the finish to the match. It's not clear entirely when she hurt her foot, but it won't be good news for WWE if she's unable to take part in the build-up for Bayley's match with Iyo Sky at WrestleMania. There has been no mention of the Women's Tag Team Championships being defended, so an injury may not change WWE's plans, but a broken ankle would be unfortunate news.
Asuka's Definitive 10 Best WWE Matches, Ranked
Asuka is one of the best female wrestlers in WWE history, with plenty of great matches on her resume. Some have speculated that the injury took place when Asuka jumped off the apron of the ring and landed awkwardly. Prior to the moment Iyo Sky jumped into the ring, Asuka was jumping around with no visible signs of a problem. The hope is that it's not something serious.
If Asuka can't wrestle and she was supposed to, the good news for WWE is that Dakota Kai just returned from her injury and could take Asuka's place.
The Curse of the Women's Tag Team Championships
It's been a running theme that the Women's Tag Team titles have brought with them bad fortune for the title holders. The moment those titles were introduced, one-half of almost every duo that ever held them suffered an injury. Because of the timing of said injuries, the titles haven't gained much momentum or had the chance to become something important in WWE. The Kabuki Warriors holding the belts gave the titles a shot at becoming something. Asuka's injury is just the latest of many to plague those belts.
If the issue is minor, WWE won't have to do anything with the belts as they've been defended fairly regularly. But, if the injury is serious, either Dakota and Kair will hold them while Asuka is out, or WWE will need to make other arrangements.
