Summary

  • A One Tree Hill revival could fix the flaw in the show's later seasons by bringing back the original cast and reestablishing the important relationships that made the series successful.
  • The departure of Lucas and Peyton after season 6 created a void in the show that was difficult to fill, leading to a dip in quality in the final seasons.
  • A potential revival could see Lucas and Peyton return to Tree Hill with their daughter, reigniting the dynamic relationships and storylines that were missing in the later seasons.

It’s been over 10 years since the final episode of One Tree Hill aired, and while there aren’t current plans for another series, a revival could help to fix the biggest flaw in the show’s later seasons. One Tree Hill first aired on September 23, 2003, and ran for nine seasons, cementing its legacy as one of the greatest, most popular teen drama series. In the time since the show ended, multiple One Tree Hill cast members have shared their willingness to reboot the series, raising the potential for it to be revised in some way.

The original story of One Tree Hill followed two half-brothers, Lucas and Nathan Scott, as they learned to be teammates, friends, and eventually family through playing on their high school basketball team in a small town in North Carolina. The series is fondly remembered for its drama, the tough subjects it tackled, its killer soundtrack, and its many characters and romances. Though there were great One Tree Hill storylines in each season, like many long-running shows, it experienced a dip in quality in the later seasons. However, a One Tree Hill revival could help fix the problem created in the later seasons through one major change.

The Original Cast Of One Tree Hill Broke Up After Season 6

For the majority of its nine seasons, One Tree Hill's core cast consisted of the Scott brothers, Haley, Brooke, and Peyton, with a strong supporting cast that made for a truly great ensemble show. There were multiple characters who rotated in and out of the main cast, including Keith, Whitey, Karen, and Deb, but it wasn’t until the end of One Tree Hill season 6 that the original cast truly broke up. In the One Tree Hill season 6 finale, Peyton and Lucas made the decision to leave Tree Hill with their newborn daughter, marking a turning point for the series.

Chad Michael Murray (Lucas) left One Tree Hill ahead of season 7 because of contract disputes while Hilarie Burton (Peyton) said her leaving was the result of a mutual decision between herself and the producers. With two of the original main characters gone, One Tree Hill had to pivot to focus on other characters, which led to the introduction of Haley’s older sister, Quinn, and her love interest and Nathan’s agent, Clay. Still, the task of filling the hole that Peyton and Lucas’s absence left was nearly impossible despite One Tree Hill’s best efforts in its final three seasons.

The Characters' Relationships Made One Tree Hill Successful

Trying to continue One Tree Hill after Peyton and Lucas exited the series was particularly difficult because it took away some of the show’s greatest and most important relationships. While there were still many interesting and shocking storylines, what made One Tree Hill such a success were the relationships that became the true heart of the series. The original draw to One Tree Hill was the relationship between Nathan and Lucas as half-brothers and how they grew from enemies to true friends and family.

One Tree Hill also featured two of the most iconic teen television friendships between Brooke and Peyton and Haley and Lucas. Haley and Lucas were a prime example of a platonic friendship between male and female characters, making One Tree Hill one of the few teen shows to sidestep the classic best friends-to-lovers arc. Though the show’s later seasons attempted to strengthen the relationships between the remaining main cast and the new and old supporting characters, the later seasons weren’t as compelling without the relationships from the earlier seasons.

A One Tree Hill Revival Could Bring Lucas And Peyton Back

One Tree Hill ended after an abridged season 9 and a series finale in which both Lucas and Peyton were notably absent. The final scene of the finale featured a flash forward to when Haley and Nathan’s son, Jamie, was in high school playing for the Tree Hill Ravens and having beaten his father’s scoring record. It’s hard to believe his aunt and uncle would have missed out on Jamie’s high school basketball career, or other crucial moments like Brooke's wedding in One Tree Hill season 8, but setting a revival with Peyton and Lucas following this time could help fix the problem with the later seasons.

When Peyton and Lucas left One Tree Hill, their plan was to travel the world, but a revival could see them return to Tree Hill with their daughter, who would be pretty close in age to Brooke’s twin boys and Nathan and Haley’s daughter. In a One Tree Hill revival, Peyton could manage Red Bedroom Records again, which she’d founded with Haley, while Lucas could still be an author, returning to his hometown for inspiration for his next book. This would not only bring the original characters together again but reintroduce the relationships that had been sorely missed in One Tree Hill’s later seasons.
