WWE Superstars tend to be incredibly professional, often sticking to their character no matter what the situation is. While their personalities can be completely different in real life, when it comes to appearing on-screen they are always focused on sticking to their character which allows the correct storylines to be told.

However, there have been certain times over the years when wrestlers have broken character in front of fans for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it has been obvious that it has happened and why, whereas there are other moments where it isn't quite as clear why the wrestlers acted in that manner.
10 Randy Orton (Reassuring Shane McMahon's Family)
Randy Orton has often been seen as a very serious character, often portraying a heel for the majority of his career, which is why seeing him break character was a surprise. This happened in the middle of the men's Survivor Series match in 2016 when Orton could be seen chatting away with a young fan at ringside.
That fan happened to be Shane McMahon's son who was concerned after his father had to be taken to the back in the middle of the match due to an injury. Orton was letting him know that his father was okay, taking the time to ensure he wasn't upset.
9 Brock Lesnar (R-Truth Made Him Laugh)
Brock Lesnar is another wrestler that is well known for being quite a serious star, playing things straight whenever he appears. Lesnar is normally out to just destroy people or look menacing, so when fans got to see him break character it created a shocking moment that fans enjoyed.

This happened because of R-Truth, who is notorious for being one of the funniest wrestlers in WWE. He came out and claimed he was going to win the Royal Rumble match to then challenge Paul Heyman for the title, which led to Lesnar losing it.
8 The Bloodline (Sami Zayn Popped The Boys)
Another example of serious wrestlers ending up laughing in the middle of the segment came from The Bloodline. The popular WWE faction are normally in the zone as they attempt to cut their promos to gain as much heat as possible, but adding Sami Zayn ended up changing that.
The former Honorary Uce brought a lot of charisma to the faction, and because he didn't truly fit in some of the things he would say and do ended up being hilarious to see. However, it wasn't just funny to the fans, as the rest of The Bloodline also ended up breaking character in the moment as well.
7 Michael Cole (Jerry Lawler Health Update)
Sometimes when people have to break character on television it can be for a far more serious reason, and that was the case during the midst of Michael Cole's heel run. He was supposed to be someone who fans hated, and he played that up other than in one episode of Raw.
This was the night that Jerry Lawler suffered a cardiac arrest, which left Cole on his own to call the show. With Lawler gone in the middle of the event an update was needed, and it fell to Cole to provide that message to the fans at home.
6 JR & Jerry Lawler (Owen Heart's Death)
Another example of commentators having to drop their on-screen characters came during the 1999 Over The Edge when Owen Hart unfortunately died. This wasn't visible to fans watching at home, so they were unaware of what was taking place at the time, and it was left to JR and Jerry Lawler to deliver the unfortunate news.
While JR was normally fairly serious with his commentary work, Lawler often played an over-the-top character at this point, so he had to completely shift gears to deliver this news to people.
5 Bret Hart (Montreal Screwjob)
Bret Hart was supposed to be a true babyface who played everything by the book, so seeing him spit in the face of Vince McMahon and sign 'WCW' on WWE television was certainly out of character for him. That was something he did as an instinctive reaction because he had been legitimately screwed by WWE.

The Montreal Screwjob is something that fans are well aware of at this point, with WWE ending his WWE Championship match against Shawn Michaels despite the fact he never tapped out. Everything that happened in the aftermath of that was Hart's genuine reaction.
4 William Regal/Daniel Bryan (A Live Prank)
Wrestlers quite often pull ribs on each other, but it isn't something that fans are normally allowed to see as these take place in the back or perhaps during a match sneakily. However, when Daniel Bryan opted to prank his mentor William Regal, it happened live on WWE television.
This happened on an episode of Superstars, which is likely why it was allowed, but it saw Regal's theme music change to his 'Real Man's Man' track. Bryan instantly starts laughing in the ring while Regal stops and has a chuckle as well.
3 Chris Jericho (An Injury To Neville)
Chris Jericho is the ultimate professional in the ring, and he is someone who takes his job very seriously. That is why fans were shocked to see him just randomly lose it with Charles Robinson during a match on Raw against Neville.
It came out of nowhere as Jericho ended up shoving the official until he got disqualified, which seemed strange in the moment. However, the reality was that Neville had been seriously injured and the match needed to be brought to an end, and Jericho felt this was the way to do it.
2 Roman Reigns (Revealing Leukaemia Diagnosis)
One of the most emotional moments in WWE history took place when Roman Reigns broke character, as he came out in normal clothing and immediately said that he was speaking as Joe, not as Roman Reigns. It broke that wall down and allowed him to talk from the heart.

Unfortunately, Reigns had bad news to deliver as he revealed to the world that he had Leukaemia, which was devastating for people to hear. It was an emotionally charged situation, and the heartfelt and honest promo that he delivered is something that won't be forgotten.
1 Becky Lynch (Announcing Her Pregnancy)
Another time that a wrestler was able to cut a promo as themselves rather than portraying a specific character was when Becky Lynch announced that she would be taking time away from the business. She revealed that she was pregnant and that led to her relinquishing the Raw Women's Championship to Asuka.
It was an emotional promo, but it was also a fantastic segment. Considering the fact it took place during the empty arena shows, it brought a much-needed moment of joy to the fanbase, and Lynch's delivery was tremendous.
