They call the Royal Rumble the kickoff to the 'Road to WrestleMania' for a reason. More often than not, the Royal Rumble is where rivalries and storylines that will impact that biggest show of the year begin to take shape.

While winning the Royal Rumble match inevitably kicks off two WrestleMania storylines, the PPV often provides more glimpses into the future than just that. The 2020 event was no exception in that regard, with plenty of teases for future storylines.

The groundwork was put in place for a variety of different potential matches at WrestleMania 36, from certain eliminations to how others performed. Here are 10 WrestleMania matches that were potentially set up at this year's Royal Rumble.

10 Drew McIntyre vs Brock Lesnar

We will kickstart the list with a WrestleMania 36 match that has been confirmed, which is Drew McIntyre challenging Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship. The Scotsman won the Royal Rumble match in order to earn the right to challenge for the title.

Because of that, we knew that a certain WrestleMania match was in his future, and WWE certainly laid the groundwork for that match to be against Brock Lesnar. After all, it was Drew McIntyre who Claymored the Beast out of the match to eliminate him.

It created an unbelievable pop from the audience and it's clear that this is a match many people want to see happen. If booked correctly, it's one that has the potential to headline WrestleMania 36 and could be a major moment for Drew McIntyre's career.

9 Edge vs Randy Orton

This is another match that seems destined for WrestleMania 36, especially following the shocking moment that took place the next night on Monday Night Raw. However, regardless of Randy Orton's actions on the flagship show, the groundwork was set inside the Royal Rumble.

Edge came out of retirement after nearly nine years to shock the WWE Universe and inside the match, he reunited with his former tag team partner, Randy Orton. The two men worked together for large chunks of the match, eliminating people and dominating the match.

However, when it came down to it, Edge was the one who sent the Viper over the top rope. In fairness, Randy Orton had tried to do it first, but it's clear there are some issues laying there between them.

8 Mandy Rose vs Sonya Deville

Speaking of friends starting to show signs of a fallout, Sonya Deville and Mandy Rose haven't been on the same page together in quite some time now. The romance storyline involving Otis and Mandy Rose has been complicating things for the tag team, and that happened again at the Royal Rumble.

While Otis was out and saved Mandy Rose, the same cannot be said for Sonya Deville. He wasn't able to get the job done to keep her in the match and tensions are certainly rising between them.

Seeing the tag team explode just in time for WrestleMania 36 could be an interesting route to take and may very well end up seeing them compete against each other.

7 Charlotte Flair vs Bayley

Charlotte Flair will be at WrestleMania 36 and will be competing for either the Raw or SmackDown Women's Championship after winning the Royal Rumble for the first time in her career.

While Flair obviously has two options to choose from, a match against Bayley seems to make the most sense. Mainly because Charlotte has mixed it up with Becky Lynch so many times that fans are tired of the storyline.

Furthermore, SmackDown is seriously lacking in top babyface talent and moving someone with Charlotte's star power onto the show would be a way of filling that void.

6 Shayna Baszler vs Becky Lynch

Speaking of Becky Lynch, she also defended her Raw Women's Championship and seems destined to defend the title at WrestleMania 36. Who is a better opponent than Shayna Baszler for Lynch to defend the belt against?

Baszler has done everything possible in NXT and she certainly made an impact when she arrived in the Royal Rumble at number 30. Eliminating eight women, making it to the final two alongside Charlotte Flair.

Considering her history with Ronda Rousey, Baszler just seems like the ideal candidate to come in and provide a major threat to Becky Lynch's incredible title reign.

5 Kevin Owens vs Samoa Joe

They might be the best of friends right now, but everyone knows that typically, Samoa Joe and Kevin Owens don't play nicely with others. Even though they're working together right now to deal with common enemies, this isn't a relationship that is built to last.

It just feels like a matter of time before one of them turns on the other and shows their true colors. Within the Royal Rumble match, both men were eliminated by Seth Rollins, but they did share a moment where they brawled against each other.

It was a friendly exchange but also a tease for what might come in the future. Perhaps this was WWE testing the waters to see how the fans would react, and the interaction certainly got the fans excited.

4 Roman Reigns vs The Fiend

The two men didn't have any formal interaction during the Royal Rumble PPV, but that doesn't mean that the match won't be happening at WrestleMania 36. The Fiend defended his Universal Title and moved one step closer towards a major 'Mania match.

While Roman Reigns wasn't able to win the Royal Rumble, he did come in second place and prove himself to be the top star on SmackDown. He also defeated King Corbin earlier on in the evening.

It seems like this is the match WWE is gearing towards, and it would certainly make sense following the Royal Rumble. As far as SmackDown goes, these two men came out of the Rumble looking the strongest, so it would make sense.

3 Edge vs AJ Styles

While it seems like WWE is leaning towards having Edge face his former tag team partner, there was also a tease of another match in his future. This one was a tease of a dream match that has never happened, and one that fans would likely enjoy.

That is a match between Edge and AJ Styles. Two of the biggest stars in professional wrestling history that haven't competed against each other, which fans would be desperate to see at WrestleMania.

AJ Styles, unfortunately, got injured during the Rumble, but it was Edge who eliminated him from the match. The Rated-R Superstar also helped dispatch The O.C., so there could easily be a 'Mania match being put together here.

2 Beth Phoenix vs Natalya

While we know and love them as a tag team, that doesn't mean that WWE wouldn't pit Natalya and Beth Phoenix against each other at WrestleMania. The Glamazon put in an incredible performance at the Royal Rumble and was one of the highlights of the women's match.

Even though she worked together alongside Natalya for large portions of the match, she showed no hesitation when it came to launching her over the top rope. It was a massive moment from the match and one that the WWE Universe absolutely loved.

Fans would have no complaints if WWE brought back Beth Phoenix to compete in a dream match against her friend to really add to the WrestleMania card.

1 King Corbin vs Matt Riddle

There have been rumors that the NXT brand will have some form of role at WrestleMania 36 this year, which means we could see members of the roster pop up on the show. Many of them were involved in the Royal Rumble as well, including Matt Riddle.

Fans were incredibly excited to see the King of the Bros hit the ring to mix it up with the main roster, but his time in the match was short-lived. None other than King Corbin himself quickly disposed of Riddle, making light work of the NXT star.

With Corbin firmly over as one of WWE's top heels in the company, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him get a big WrestleMania spot. Facing Matt Riddle wouldn't be a bad way of featuring him at all.
